The 0.5 FTE Clinical Ethics Provisional Fellowship at The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN) is an advanced training position in Clinical Ethics. The Fellow will help provide input and participate in further developing the SCHN Clinical Ethics Support Service (CESS) which is acknowledged as an important service within the Network. The Fellowship is a valuable learning experience both for the Fellow and the Network, in developing and sharing ethics capacity at all organisational levels, and reflecting on ‘what we ought to do, not just what we can do’ in clinical care.
The Fellow will be involved in all five domains of the SCHN CESS: education, clinical ethics consultation, embedding ethics into organisational policy, research and academic connections and clinical ethics service planning and development. The Fellowship offers an invaluable opportunity to gain experience and training in Clinical Ethics. The Fellow will also contribute to the important development of the SCHN Clinical Ethics Support Service.
The Provisional Fellow position provides Advanced Trainees an opportunity to further their experience and ethical analysis skills in clinical ethics consultation, where an ethical question, disagreement or values tensions have arisen in clinical care. They will learn to apply ethics frameworks to address dilemmas in clinical practice. The position also provides an opportunity for further training and the development of skills important for a consultant role in the spheres of clinical care, education and training, as well as research with support from the team consultants and other health care professionals.
The Provisional Fellow role is a leadership role, both within the department for other junior medical staff and medical students as well as members of the multidisciplinary team, but also across the broader hospital community. Job sharing arrangements for some positions may be considered. Trainees who have completed their FRACP requirements may not be eligible for this position. At times the trainee may be requested to provide clinical support across The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network.
